Raising a teenager is wild, right?

They can act like everyone in the house is personally responsible for ruining their life, then twenty minutes later say something insanely kind or even cook dinner for everyone.

They can be rude, tender, ungrateful, thoughtful, combative, and deeply caring...sometimes before breakfast. Anyone else get worn out from parenting their teen?

If you're like me you might start wondering if anything you’re doing is getting through. If they notice your patience. If your encouragement matters. Or if the boundary you held did anything besides make them mad.

Here's your reminder: IT MATTERS.

Every time you stay calm when they bring chaos, you’re teaching them something. Every time you affirm who they are without pretending their behavior is acceptable, you’re teaching them something. Every time you say, “I love you, and you still cannot speak to me that way,” you’re showing them that love can be both safe and strong.

I'm not suggesting they're going to be able to acknowledge this anytime soon. It might take another decade.

It could show up years from now when they’re loving a struggling friend, raising their own strong-willed child, or trying to hold a boundary without becoming cruel. Maybe one day God will give them a child just like them and when that happens, they may know how to love that child well because they remember how you loved them.

Not perfectly. Not without getting tired, irritated, or occasionally needing to sit in your car and stare into the distance for a while, but patiently. With warmth, affection, boundaries, consequences, and a refusal to give up on who they’re becoming.

If you're currently raising a teen who can make the whole house feel like it needs an exorcism before breakfast, keep going! You’re not only surviving their hard season, you’re slowly teaching them how secure love behaves.

90s rap is my go-to music, but I'm also a sucker for a good love song. Recently, I came across a song by Kyle Schuesler called Easy to Love. There's a line in the chorus that stuck with me....“She makes it look easy to run, but I wanna be the reason she don’t want to.”

Not because a healthy marriage is about trapping someone or convincing them they’re not allowed to leave. Quite the opposite.

A strong marriage recognizes that both people have a choice. Your spouse is not your property. They’re not obligated to keep offering closeness simply because a ceremony happened years ago. They choose you.

And I think there’s a beautiful challenge in asking: Am I becoming the kind of spouse my spouse wants to come home to?

Not a flawless spouse. Not someone who never disappoints them. But someone who listens without immediately preparing a defense. Someone who repairs damage instead of only explaining intentions. Someone who brings warmth into ordinary moments, tells the truth, stays curious, and puts their phone down to reach for their hand across the couch.

Someone whose presence allows their nervous system to find peace.

A marriage certificate cannot create desire. You can demand that somebody stay and still make them miserable that they did.

Maybe the better question isn’t, “How do I make sure they never leave?” Maybe it’s, “What am I building here that makes staying a choice they want to keep making?”

Do they feel liked by me? Safe with me? Wanted by me? Known by me? Do my daily habits say, “I’m grateful you’re here”? Or do they say, “You’re not going anywhere, so I can give you whatever is left over”?

Marriage isn’t something you win and then stop tending. Your spouse is not a couch you bought. They are a human being who wakes up every morning with a will of their own.

So be someone worth choosing. Not from panic. Not through performance. From love. Then spend your marriage giving them beautiful reasons to keep choosing you.

Sometimes you have to behave yourself back into being a couple.

That may sound strange because we usually think marriage works from the inside out.

First I feel close, then I reach for you. First I feel appreciated, then I appreciate you. First I feel hopeful about us, then I start trying again. But when a marriage is on the rocks those feelings are sitting in the corner with their arms crossed, waiting for the other person to go first.

So both spouses keep waiting while the marriage quietly starves.

Here me out...sometimes our repeated behavior helps shape who we become and the behavior can come first. The feelings may follow. I see couples struggle with this all the time.

“I don’t feel like talking.”
“I don’t feel interested in their day.”
“I don’t feel hopeful enough to try.”

I understand that. But you may have been waiting three years to feel differently, and waiting hasn’t exactly produced a miracle. At some point, you may have to stop letting today’s emotions make every decision about tomorrow’s marriage.

You listen even though part of you is still feels defensive.
You ask about their day and actually stay for the answer.
You sit beside them instead of retreating to your usual side of the house.
You say thank you without attaching an invoice for everything you’ve done lately.

That isn’t being fake. It’s choosing to behave according to the spouse you want to be and the marriage you say you want, not simply according to whatever emotion is loudest today.

Of course, this doesn’t mean pretending betrayal didn’t happen, tolerating abuse or carrying the whole marriage while your spouse refuses to participate. Those are different conversations. Repair requires safety, honesty, accountability and willingness from both people.

But when two people still want the marriage and have simply forgotten how to move toward one another, they may need to start moving before they feel ready.

A marriage rarely climbs out of a ditch because two exhausted people suddenly wake up overflowing with romance. Usually, it happens through small choices repeated long enough to create a different experience of each other.

I’ve been reading Ben Carson’s 'Take the Risk', and I like the idea, but I kept thinking about the people who sit in front of me.

For someone already living in fear, “take the risk” can make their brain stare directly at everything that could go wrong and that can be frightening.

What if I get hurt again?
What if I fail?
What if they leave?
What if I finally open up and regret it?

Give fear five minutes, and it will build a convincing case for never leaving the house, trusting another human, or having a difficult conversation again.

So maybe the invitation is simpler...
Give yourself a chance.
Give yourself a chance to heal.
Give yourself a chance to be known.
Give yourself a chance to find love, make peace, repair what’s been broken, or discover that you’re stronger than the thing that hurt you.

That doesn’t mean ignoring red flags or launching yourself off an emotional cliff wearing a blindfold. It means fear doesn’t automatically get to make every decision just because it speaks first and loudly.

Your nervous system may want a notarized guarantee that nothing painful will ever happen again. Unfortunately, life does not provide those, but sometimes fear builds a prison and calls it peace.

You don’t have to feel completely ready. You don’t have to know exactly how it ends. You may just need enough courage to take one honest step toward the life you keep saying you want.

So, give yourself a chance. Not because the outcome is guaranteed, but because fear shouldn’t be allowed to reject your life on your behalf.

Love gets safer when gratitude becomes a habit instead of an emergency response.

Too many people wait until their spouse is halfway out the door before noticing everything they brought into the room.

Say thank you now. Put the phone down now. Be curious now. Let them feel chosen while they’re still choosing you.

Be the spouse who treats familiar love like it’s still worth protecting.

It’s easy to appreciate someone after the house gets quiet. The harder, healthier work is appreciating them while they’re still standing in the kitchen asking what you want for supper.

Put the phone down. Soften your voice. Ask how they’re really doing.

Gratitude isn’t just something you feel. It’s how you treat someone before losing them teaches you their value.

Marriage changes when you stop thinking, “Of course they’ll be here,” and start thinking, “I’m fortunate this person still chooses to share a life with me.”

That shift makes you attentive. You listen better. You say thank you. You stop handing your spouse the leftovers of your energy and calling it commitment.

Familiar love is still valuable. Might be a good idea to start acting like it.

One of the best mindsets you can have in your marriage is to stop seeing your spouse as someone you’re entitled to and start seeing being with them as a privilege.

Entitlement has a sneaky way of making us careless.

Of course they’ll be there.
Of course they’ll listen.
Of course they’ll keep choosing us.
Of course they’ll forgive the sharp tone, the halfhearted effort, and the years of getting whatever version of us is left after everyone else has had our best.

But what if you woke up thinking, “I’m incredibly fortunate that this person has chosen to share their life with me”?

You’d probably listen differently.

You’d be more present when they spoke.
You’d notice what they carry.
You’d say thank you more often.
You’d protect the connection instead of assuming it could survive on leftovers.

Seeing your spouse as a privilege doesn’t mean putting them on a pedestal, ignoring harmful behavior, or walking on eggshells. It means remembering that this is another human being with their own heart, history, needs, and choices. Their presence in your life is meaningful. It deserves care.

Familiarity can make beautiful things feel ordinary.

That’s how spouses slowly become roommates, coworkers, coparents, or two exhausted people arguing over who is going to pick up dinner from Taco Delite.

Here's a great question to ask yourself: If I really believed sharing my life with my spouse was a privilege, how would I show up differently tonight?

Maybe you’d put your phone down.
Maybe you’d soften your tone.
Maybe you’d ask a better question.
Maybe you’d stop keeping score long enough to notice the person sitting across from you.

Don’t get so comfortable being loved that you become careless with the person loving you.

Husbands, not making her mad isn't a good marriage strategy.
Hear me out.

I see it often when I'm working with couples. When a husband decides he can’t make his wife happy (not his job to begin with, more on that later), he may settle for trying not to make her upset.

That can look like effort. He watches her mood, avoids certain subjects, keeps his head down, and says whatever ends the argument fastest. From the outside, he looks agreeable.

But, inside the marriage, he has gone missing.

And to reiterate what I said in the beginning, it is not your job to make your wife happy. She is responsible for her emotional life, just like you are responsible for yours.

But don’t use that truth as an escape hatch. You are still responsible for how you show up. Your honesty, effort, habits, and willingness to listen, initiate, and repair matter.

Caring about your wife’s feelings is healthy, but organizing your entire marriage around preventing them is not.

If your main goal is keeping her from getting upset, you will eventually start hiding. You’ll avoid necessary conversations, agree to things you don’t mean, give half-answers, and wait for her to bring up every problem. Then you’ll call the absence of an argument “peace.”

But peace is not the same as health.

A healthy marriage requires you to accept that your wife may sometimes be disappointed, frustrated, or angry with you and you must remain honest and engaged anyway.

You can listen without collapsing.
You can disagree without becoming cruel.
You can apologize without drowning in shame.
You can care about her feelings without trying to control them.

Stop asking only, “How do I keep her from getting upset?”

Ask better questions:
“What does this marriage need from me?”
“What conversation am I avoiding?”
“Where have I become passive?”
“What kind of husband do I want to be?”

You cannot build a healthy marriage alone. Repair requires two people working toward the same vision. But your choices should still line up with the man you want to be.

Your wife doesn’t need your highest marital goal to be staying out of trouble. She needs a partner and that requires more than trying not to make her mad.

I've recently had several conversations about emotional safety with my couples. Here are my thoughts...

I believe it has two parts.

The first is the safety we experience with our partner. Can I be honest without being mocked, dismissed, punished, or given the silent treatment? Can we disagree and still treat each other with respect? When one of us causes hurt (eventually we will) because none of us came with perfect factory settings, can we own it and make things right?

The second is the safety we build within ourselves.

Do I trust myself to pay attention when something feels wrong. Do I trust myself to speak up, set a boundary, ask for what I need, and make hard choices when necessary?

In other words, I trust you to treat me with care. And I trust myself to speak up when something doesn't feel right.

Being a secure person (grounded, anchored, etc.) doesn’t make poor behavior acceptable. It simply means I don’t have to lose myself trying to keep the peace.

Internal safety isn’t a substitute for a safe partner. We need both.

The strongest relationships aren’t made up of two people who never hurt or disappoint each other. They’re made up of people who can be honest, take responsibility, repair what was damaged, and keep showing up with care.

That’s the kind of safety everything good can grow from.

I'm guilty of spending most of my time focused on what needs to work better in relationships. But, relationships also grow when we notice what is already good and worth celebrating.

Tonight, before you go to sleep, try making a relationship highlight reel with your partner. Each of you can write down:

- Trips or adventures you still talk about
- Hard seasons you’re proud you survived together
- Ordinary moments that felt especially safe or happy
- Times you made a great team
- Inside jokes that would concern an outside observer
- Moments when you felt deeply loved, understood, or chosen

Then share your lists.

You may be surprised by what your partner remembers. It'll also help you remember your relationship is more than the daily chores, calendars, conflicts, and the random pile of laundry on the kitchen table.

Appreciation doesn’t mean ignoring what needs attention. It means intentionally remembering what you’ve built and why it’s worth continuing to nurture.

At the minimum, today ask each other this question: What is one moment from our relationship that you always look back on fondly?

Most spouses I talk with could give me a painfully detailed performance review of their partner. They can tell me what’s missing, what needs to change, and the 18 ways their spouse is doing marriage wrong. When I ask them, “How are you showing up?” I often get blank stares.

It makes sense. When a relationship feels bad, our eyes naturally go to the other person. But the more I focus on managing someone I cannot control, the more anxious I usually become.

My brain starts watching, predicting, chasing, convincing, keeping score, or building a case. That’s a miserable way to live. Also a terrible way to love.

Turning the focus toward yourself doesn’t mean pretending your partner’s behavior is okay. It doesn’t mean becoming the only person responsible for the marriage. And it sure as hell doesn’t mean tolerating abuse. It means returning to the one person you can actually lead: You.

Here are seven questions worth asking:
What kind of spouse do I want to be, even when I’m disappointed?
Am I speaking honestly and directly, or hoping my mood will do the talking?
Am I listening to understand, or just waiting to prove my point?
When I’m hurt, do I move toward clarity or punishment, withdrawal, and scorekeeping?
Can I own my part without taking ownership of theirs?
Are my boundaries protecting what is good, or are they attempts to control what my partner does?
Am I staying aligned with the kind of love I say I want to give?

Focusing on yourself doesn’t guarantee your spouse will change. That’s not the point. It helps you become more grounded, less reactive, and much clearer about what is and isn’t okay. You can speak firmly without exploding. Set a boundary without playing games. Ask for change without begging.

Your spouse’s behavior matters, but you will lose yourself trying to manage it.

A better question than “When will they become the partner I need?” might be:
“Who do I want to be in this marriage and what do I need to do next to remain aligned with that?”

Couples come into my office wanting to communicate better, but most of the time, communication isn’t the deepest problem. Safety is.

I'm not talking about physical safety. I'm talking about...

Can I tell you I’m hurt without you immediately defending yourself?
Can I disagree without being punished, dismissed, or shut out?
Can I tell you what I need without having to manage your reaction?
Can you hear how your behavior affects me without turning the conversation into everything I’ve done wrong?

Emotional safety doesn’t mean nobody gets upset. It doesn’t mean avoiding conflict or carefully tiptoeing around each other. It means we can tell the truth and trust that neither of us will use it as a weapon.

If you want to know how your relationship is actually doing, ask your partner: Do you feel emotionally safe with me?

Then be quiet.

Don’t explain.
Don’t defend.
Don’t correct their experience.

Listen.

Because the real test of emotional safety isn’t whether they give the “right” answer. It’s what you do when they tell you the truth.

You can’t build intimacy where honesty keeps getting punished.

Sometimes what we call “keeping the peace” is really just abandoning ourselves quietly. It's when you start paying attention to their mood before you say what you actually think.

You wait for the “right time.” You soften it. You let things go. You tell yourself it’s not worth the argument...and maybe, in the moment, it works.

No blowup. No ruined evening. No tension. But after a while, you realize the peace only exists because you keep disappearing. That’s not peace.

That’s fear with good manners.

I see this a lot in relationships. One person gets upset, and the other immediately starts scrambling.

How do I fix this?
How do I calm them down?
What do I need to say so this stops?

And somewhere in all of that, they stop asking what they actually think, feel, need, or believe. Being healthy doesn’t mean you stop caring that your spouse is upset. It means their being upset doesn’t automatically mean you did something wrong.

You can listen. You can take responsibility when you need to. You can change when change is needed, but you don’t have to hand someone else the authority to decide who you are every time they’re disappointed in you.

That may feel selfish at first, especially if you’ve spent years believing love means keeping everyone comfortable, but you are allowed to stay in the room too.

A healthy relationship needs two people who are both allowed to exist.

Not one person having emotions and the other person walking on eggshells trying to survive them.

One thing I wish more couples understood is that a “no” does not have to be a dead end...it can be a detour.

Because simply “no” can hit hard in a relationship.

No, I don’t want to go.
No, I’m not ready to talk.
No, I don’t have the energy.
No, I can’t do that tonight.

And before you know it, the other person is hearing way more than what was actually said.

They hear:
You don’t want me.
You’re rejecting me.
You don’t care.
I should stop trying.

Which may not be true at all.
Sometimes “no” just means:
I’m tired.
I’m overwhelmed.
That feels like too much pressure.
I want connection, just not in that exact way.
I need something smaller right now.

That’s why I like the idea of a “No, but...”

Not the annoying kind of “but” where someone says, “I hear you, but…” and then proceeds to not hear you at all. I mean the connecting kind. It can sound like:

“No, I can’t do Saturday night, but I could do coffee Sunday morning.”
“No, I’m not ready to have the whole conversation right now, but I can sit with you for a few minutes.”
“No, that feels like too much, but I’d be willing to try something smaller.”

That little second half matters. It tells the other person, “I’m not saying yes to that, but I’m also not closing the door on you.” and that’s a big deal.

A lot of couples don’t need to stop having boundaries. They just need boundaries that don’t sound like abandonment, because love is not saying yes to everything.

Sometimes love says, “Not that. Not tonight. Not like that.”, but healthy love also says, “Here’s where I can meet you.”

That’s how couples rebuild trust in small pieces. Not with some dramatic Notebook-style speech in the rain. Usually it’s way less cinematic and way more boring.

It’s two people learning:

I can be honest without being cruel.
You can hear no without spiraling.
We can adjust without calling it failure.

That’s not a dead end, that’s a detour. Somewhere to go...together.

Most couples don’t need another communication tool. They need a shared vision. They need a conversation about what they're actually trying to build.

I hear “we need to communicate better” everyday from my couples, but it's often a mask for...
I want to feel chosen.
I want to stop feeling alone in this house.
I want to know we’re still building something and not just co-managing bills, kids, laundry, etc.

I find the life of Jesus fascinating. One of the most piercing questions he asked people over and over was surprisingly simple, “What do you want?”

Not, “Can you explain your theology?”
Not, “Can you win this argument?”
Not, “Can you prove you’re the mature one?”

Rather, "What do you want?" And if you can answer that question honestly it will absolutely wreck your marriage in the best way.

Because most couples are fighting about the surface things.
The dishes.
The tone.
The spending.
The phone.
The sex.
The in-laws.
The way one of you chews too loud.

But underneath that...

Do you want peace?
Power?
Closeness?
Control?
Respect?
Safety?
To be pursued?
To not feel like the only adult in the room?
To stop feeling like love means losing yourself?

Until a couple can answer that, they’ll keep arguing about symptoms and calling it “working on the marriage.”

Jesus didn’t just manage behavior. He went after desire. Because what we want shapes who we become and that’s in marriage, too.

A couple without a shared vision will eventually default to survival. They’ll handle the calendar, pay the bills, raise the kids, and slowly forget there was ever supposed to be a “we” in the middle of all of it.

So maybe the better question isn’t, “How do we stop fighting?”
Maybe it’s, "What kind of marriage are we trying to build?"

What do we want our home to feel like?
What do we want our kids to learn about love by watching us?
What kind of people do we want to become because we belong to each other?

Because you can't build a marriage on autopilot and then act shocked when it crashes.

Most couples spend too much time talking about their "feelings".

I know. Weird thing for a marriage therapist to say.

Feelings do matter, but I'm talking about actual feelings...

Sad.
Angry.
Scared.
Anxious.
Frustrated.
Lonely.

But a lot of what couples call “feelings” are really conclusions.

“I feel like you don’t care.”
“I feel like I don’t matter.”
“I feel like you’re selfish.”

That may be honest, but it is not a feeling. It is the story your brain started telling and the second your spouse hears it, their brain becomes a tiny courtroom attorney.

“I do care.”
“That’s not fair.”
“You’re exaggerating.”
“That’s not what happened.”

Now nobody is talking about the real issue. They’re just tossing emotional subpoenas across the room. A cleaner version sounds like this:

“When you didn’t call after you said you would, I felt anxious and frustrated. The story I told myself was that I didn’t matter to you in that moment.” That gives your spouse something they can actually respond to.

Not a verdict.
Not a character assassination.
Not an emotional invoice.

Just an honest look at what happened inside of you, but repair also requires another question. Before you ask your spouse to own their part, ask yourself:

“Did I show up the way I want to show up when things get hard?”

Because sometimes your spouse’s feelings are not fully yours to carry. Sometimes they are hurt because of an old wound. Sometimes they are anxious because of a story their brain told them.

But also…

Sometimes you were sharp.
Dismissive.
Defensive.
Cold.
Or allergic to accountability.

Healthy love does not say, “Your feelings are your problem.” It says, “I may not be responsible for every feeling you have, but I am responsible for the kind of partner I choose to be.”

That is the work.

Not winning.
Not proving.
Not building a criminal case because your spouse loaded the dishwasher like a stray cat.

The work is learning to say:

“I was anxious.”
“I told myself a story.”
“I should not have yelled.”
“I got defensive.”
“I didn’t show up the way I want to show up.”

That kind of ownership changes the room. It does not erase what your spouse did. But it gives repair somewhere to begin.

I usually write about marriage here.

But this is for the person who keeps missing someone they probably know they shouldn’t go back to.

Before you text them, call them, or resurrect the whole thing like a raccoon digging through emotional trash…pause for a second.

Ask yourself something more honest: Do I actually miss them or do I miss who I felt like when I was with them? Because sometimes it’s not the person we’re aching for. It’s the version of us they brought out.

You miss feeling wanted.
Chosen.
Funny.
Beautiful.
Known.
Safe.
Like somebody had you.
Like there was a place to land.
And that matters.

I’m not going to minimize it. That kind of connection can feel like oxygen when you’ve been living on emotional fumes, but it still doesn’t mean they are your home.

Sometimes a person wakes up a part of you that had been quiet for a long time.

The playful part.
The soft part.
The confident part.
The hopeful part.
The part of you that felt alive instead of just functional.

And when the relationship ends, it can feel like that part of you left with them.

But it didn’t.
It’s still yours.

They may have awakened it.
They may have made it easier to feel.
They may have reminded you it existed.
But they do not own it.

So instead of asking, “How do I get them back?”, ask, “How do I become that version of myself again without needing them to create it?”

Start small and name what you actually miss.
Do you miss feeling desired? Safe? Playful? Brave? Seen?
Then begin building tiny pieces of that life again.

If you miss feeling beautiful, get dressed for your own eyes.
If you miss feeling playful, go do something ridiculous that makes you laugh.
If you miss feeling safe, build one steady routine your body can count on.
If you miss being known, tell the truth to someone who can hold it well.

And grieve what was real without making it prettier than it was.
Something can be meaningful and still not be healthy to return to.

Healing is when you can say:
“I miss what I felt with you…
but I am learning how to feel whole without you.”

That’s growing up emotionally without making another human responsible for keeping you alive and safe inside.

Recently, I read a story about a celebrity couple splitting up and one line got me.

In an interview, the former wife shared a story about asking her then husband if he had gotten her anything for her birthday.

His response was basically, “How could I? I don’t even know who you are anymore.”

And she said that’s when she knew the relationship was over.

The marriage therapist in me immediately thought:
But why did that have to be the ending?

Not because every relationship should be saved.
Not because people should stay in something harmful.
Not because “just communicate” magically fixes betrayal, contempt, or years of emotional neglect.

But because “I don’t know who you are anymore” can either be a funeral…
or an invitation.

People change.

Sometimes that change is selfish.
Sometimes it’s avoidance.
Sometimes it’s grief.
Sometimes it’s growth.
Sometimes it’s a person finally becoming who they were too afraid, too young, too wounded, or too survival-mode to be before.

The question is not just, “Do I still know you?”

The deeper question is:
Do I want to know you now?

Do I have the humility to stop punishing you for not staying the same?
Do I have the curiosity to learn the person in front of me instead of arguing with the version of you I expected?
Do I even want you to be better…
or do I just want you to be familiar?

That’s where marriage either starts breathing again or quietly dies at the kitchen table.

There is not much to work with when one or both people have no desire to be curious anymore.

But when two people still have even a small amount of willingness?
A tiny “I don’t know you like I used to, but I’d like to”…

That’s not nothing.
That’s a door cracked open.

And sometimes, that’s where the next chapter begins.

The problem with assumptions is they feel exactly like facts.
That's what makes them so dangerous.

Nobody wakes up and says, "I'd like to create a completely fictional story about my spouse today."

Your brain takes a look, a tone, a text message, a sigh, or a facial expression and immediately starts filling in the blanks.

Before long, you've got motives, intentions, and a full Netflix documentary built around six seconds of evidence.

Then you get angry at your spouse for a story they didn't even know was being written.

Most marriage fights don't start with what actually happened.
They start with what one person assumed happened.

And the scary part?
The assumption feels so true that it never occurs to us to verify it.
That's why curiosity saves marriages.

Because assumptions feel like facts.
Until you ask a question.

One of the most overrated goals in marriage is being right.
And one of the most underrated skills is knowing when it doesn't matter.

Don't get me wrong.
Sometimes you're right.

Your memory is accurate.
Your facts are correct.
Your interpretation makes sense.

The problem is that being right and being connected are not always the same thing.

I've watched couples spend thirty minutes arguing over who remembered a conversation correctly.

Who said what.
Who forgot to text.
Who started it.

By the end, nobody feels understood and nobody feels closer.

But at least somebody won.
Or did they?

Because marriage isn't a courtroom.
It's a relationship.
And relationships rarely improve when the goal becomes proving a point.

One of the healthiest things a person can learn is this:
Your spouse's feelings aren't always saying you're wrong.
Sometimes they're simply describing their experience.
And those are two different conversations.

One is about what happened.
The other is about what it felt like.

Most couples get stuck because they're trying to win the first conversation while completely missing the second.

One person is trying to explain.
The other is trying to be understood.
And both leave frustrated.

One of the hardest questions you can ask yourself during conflict is:
Do I want to be right right now, or do I want to be connected?

Because those goals often pull in different directions.

Connection asks:
"Help me understand."

Being right asks:
"Let me explain why you're wrong."

The irony is that people are usually far more open to hearing your perspective after they feel understood.

You can win the argument and still lose the moment.
You can prove your point and damage the connection.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do isn't prove you're right.
It's make sure the person you love feels understood.

One of the quietest ways a marriage starts drifting apart is when curiosity gets replaced by certainty.

At some point, many couples stop learning each other.

Not because they don't care.
Because they think they already know.

They know what that look means.
They know why their spouse is upset.
They know how the conversation is going to end.

So instead of asking questions, they start filling in the blanks.
And that's where problems begin.

I've watched couples explain in great detail what their partner is thinking, feeling, and intending.

The only problem?
They're often wrong.

Not because they're bad spouses.
Because that's exactly what our brains are designed to do.

Your brain is constantly looking for patterns and trying to predict what happens next. It takes a little bit of information and creates a story.

The problem is that what feels true isn't always true.

And your brain isn't always on the side of connection.
Its first job is safety.

That text message.
That look.
That change in tone.

Your brain quickly creates a meaning for it.

Sometimes it's accurate.
Sometimes it's not.

Healthy marriages aren't built on certainty.
They're built on curiosity.

Curiosity sounds like:

"Help me understand."
"Tell me more."
"What am I missing?"

Curiosity slows us down long enough to see the person in front of us instead of the story we've created about them.

Most marriage arguments aren't caused by a lack of love.
They're caused by assumptions.

Two people become convinced they know what the other meant, and before long they're arguing about stories neither one has verified.

Curiosity breaks that cycle.

It creates understanding.
It creates safety.
It creates connection.

The strongest marriages aren't built by people who know everything about each other. They're built by people who never stop learning.

Curiosity keeps couples connected.
Assumptions keep them stuck.

I've noticed something after years of working with couples:

The marriages that struggle the most aren't always the ones with the biggest problems.

They're often the ones where every disagreement turns into a debate.

Both people are gathering evidence.
Explaining why they're right.
Defending their intentions.
Pointing out what the other person missed.

And somehow neither person feels heard.

Because relationships don't improve when someone wins.
They improve when someone understands.

One of the healthiest things a person can say in marriage is:
"Maybe I missed something."

Not because they're weak.
Not because they're taking all the blame.
But because they're more interested in understanding than defending.

The truth is, most marriage problems aren't caused by bad intentions.
They're caused by blind spots.

Two good people can experience the same conversation completely differently and both walk away convinced they're the reasonable one.

That's why humility matters so much in marriage.

Humility isn't thinking less of yourself.
It's being willing to consider that your perspective might not be the whole story.

It's asking a question before making a conclusion.
It's staying curious when your first instinct is to get defensive.

The couples who grow aren't the ones who never get it wrong.
They're the ones who can admit when they do.

The moment a marriage becomes a competition, both people lose.
But when understanding becomes the goal, something changes.

The conversation gets safer.
Defenses soften.
Connection becomes possible again.

The goal of marriage isn't to win the argument.
It's to understand the person you're arguing with.

And that starts with a simple question:
"What if there's something here I don't see yet?"

If your relationship feels stuck, it's worth asking:
Am I trying to be understood?
Or am I trying to understand?

Something I've been thinking about lately...

I don't think growth is becoming the kind of person who never makes mistakes.

I think it's becoming the kind of person who can look back at something they did and not immediately go into defense mode.

Or self-hatred.
Just honesty.

A lot of us do one of two things when we realize we handled something poorly.

We either explain it to death.

"I was stressed."
"I was hurt."
"I was confused."
"I had my reasons."

And maybe all of that is true.

Or we go the other direction.
We beat ourselves up.

Call ourselves selfish.
Call ourselves toxic.
Decide we're the problem.

I don't think either response changes much.
The harder thing is sitting in the middle.

Looking at something honestly and saying:

Yeah. I understand why I did that.
And...
I wish I would've done it differently.

Not because I was trying to hurt anyone.
Not because I'm some terrible person.
Just because now I can see things that I couldn't see then.

That's a strange part of being human.
Sometimes the lesson arrives a few days late.

Sometimes you don't fully understand the impact of your actions until you're staring at the aftermath of them.

I've noticed that maturity has less to do with being right and more to do with being teachable.

Less about defending who you were.
More about learning from who you were.

I don't want to spend my life explaining myself.
And I don't want to spend it shaming myself either.

I'd rather tell the truth.

I understand why I did it.
And I would've handled it differently.

That's usually where growth starts.

Not every emotion needs a microphone.

Some feelings just need a snack and 20 minutes to calm down.
That realization alone could save a lot of marriages, friendships, and group texts.

Because not all emotions are created equal.

Some emotions are important signals:
“Something feels off.”
“I feel disconnected.”
“I’m hurt.”
“I’m overwhelmed.”

Those matter.

But some emotions are just your nervous system running a low-battery warning after three bad nights of sleep, too much stress, caffeine, hunger, insecurity, and a text message that simply said: “k.”

Not every feeling is a truth.
Not every frustration is a crisis.
Not every thought deserves immediate expression.

Maturity isn’t becoming emotionless.
It’s learning discernment between:
“I need to address this” and “I need a nap before I create damage.”

Because a surprising amount of conflict starts with exhausted people demanding permanent solutions for temporary emotional states.

You don’t have to suppress emotions.
You just don’t have to hand every single one a megaphone.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is:
eat something,
go for a walk,
sleep on it,
and revisit the conversation when your nervous system isn’t acting like a raccoon holding a knife.

And if you’re married? This matters even more.

A strong marriage isn’t built by two people who never feel reactive.
It’s built by two people who learn not to weaponize every feeling the moment it appears.

Sometimes emotional intelligence looks a lot less like “speaking your truth” and more like eating some ice cream and calming down.

“I do” sounds beautiful at the altar.

But “I will” is what actually sustains a marriage.

Because the real weight of a vow isn’t found in two emotional words spoken on one important day.

It’s found in the thousands of ordinary moments that follow.

“I will stay honest when it would be easier to shut down.”
“I will repair instead of defend.”
“I will stay kind even when I’m frustrated.”
“I will tell the truth about what’s happening inside me.”
“I will keep becoming someone safe to love.”

That’s the part nobody claps for.

Because vows were never just describing how you felt on your wedding day.
They were describing who you’d choose to become later.

Eventually every relationship runs into stress, disappointment, exhaustion, conflict, boredom, resentment, temptation, selfishness, grief, and unmet expectations.

Which means the real question isn’t:
“Do we love each other right now?”

It’s:
“What happens when loving each other becomes difficult?”

Because marriage will eventually ask both people:
Can you stay aligned with your values when your feelings shift?
Can you stay warm when you’re disappointed?
Can you communicate without punishing?
Can you stay honest without becoming cruel?
Can you repair after failure instead of hiding behind pride?

That’s the difference between “I do” and “I will.”

It’s incredibly easy to confuse love with readiness.

Easy to think strong feelings automatically create strong marriages.
Easy to assume commitment alone creates emotional safety.
Easy to say vows without fully understanding what those vows will eventually require from you.

Marriage has a way of exposing the gap between our intentions and our actual emotional capacity.

Not to shame us.
But to reveal us.

Anybody can say “I do” when love feels powerful.

The deeper question is:
Who will you be when loving someone requires patience, humility, restraint, honesty, forgiveness, and effort?

Because marriage doesn’t just reveal how much love you feel.

It reveals whether your character can sustain the vows you made.

Most people think marriage change requires both people changing at the same time.

And yes…eventually, healthy marriages require mutual effort.
But a relationship can absolutely begin changing when one person changes how they show up.

Because marriages are systems.

When one person becomes less defensive…the tone shifts.
When one person stops escalating…�the cycle gets interrupted.
When one person learns to stay calm instead of proving a point…�conversations stop feeling like war.

A lot of couples are stuck in accidental choreography.
One criticizes.�The other withdraws.�One pursues harder.�The other shuts down more.
Over and over.

Most people are waiting for their spouse to go first before becoming softer, calmer, safer, or more accountable.
But somebody has to stop feeding the same pattern.

Now let me be clear…
This does NOT mean tolerating abuse, carrying the entire relationship alone, or becoming emotionally enlightened while your spouse acts like they’re auditioning for a reality show.
That’s not healthy leadership.�That’s survival.

But many marriages stay stuck because both people are standing there emotionally saying: “I’ll change when they change.”

That’s a standoff. Not intimacy.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is become someone who no longer feeds the dysfunction.

You repair faster.�You listen differently.�You regulate before reacting.�You get curious instead of combative.�You take ownership without immediately defending yourself.

And strangely enough…that often changes the emotional climate of the relationship.

Not always.
But more than people think.

Because emotional maturity is contagious.�And so is emotional chaos.

That’s why so much of my work with individuals focuses on helping them strengthen the internal architecture required for healthy partnership: shame resilience, nervous system regulation, differentiation, emotional literacy, attachment awareness, internal boundaries, self-trust, and value congruence.

The healthiest marriages are usually built by two people who stopped asking, “How do I change my spouse?” and started asking, “Who am I becoming inside this relationship?”

Most couples think better communication means explaining themselves more clearly.

But a lot of the time, the real issue is this:
One person is trying to build connection…while the other is unintentionally blocking it.

Building sounds like:

“Help me understand.”
“Tell me more.”
“That makes sense.”
“I can see why you’d feel that way.”
“We’re on the same team.”

Blocking sounds like:

defensiveness
correcting tiny details
shutting down
sarcasm
eye rolling
turning pain into a debate
waiting for your turn to speak instead of listening

And here’s the hard part:
Most people don’t realize they’re blocking.

They think they’re explaining themselves.
Protecting themselves.
Defending logic.
“Just being honest.”

But to their spouse?
It feels like trying to have a conversation with a locked door.

A marriage doesn’t become safe because two people love each other.
It becomes safe because two people learn how to stay emotionally open when things get uncomfortable.

That’s the work.

Not winning.
Not proving your point better.
Not having the perfect comeback three hours later in the shower.

Building means your spouse leaves the conversation feeling more understood, not more alone.

And no, this doesn’t mean agreeing with everything.
You can disagree and still build.
You can hold boundaries and still build.
You can be frustrated and still build.

Because building is less about the topic…
and more about the posture you bring into the room.

A lot of marriages are starving, not for love, but for emotional safety during conflict.

Pay attention to your patterns this week:
When your spouse comes to you…do they experience you as someone building connection?

Or blocking it?

Men, if sex is the only place you know how to connect,
then every “no”/"not right now" will start to feel like disconnection or rejection.

So you pursue harder.
You initiate more.
You try to create more opportunities.

Not because you’re selfish…
but because you’re trying to get back to connection.

And that’s where things quietly shift.

Because for her, it doesn’t feel like connection anymore.
It feels like expectation.
And expectation, especially around something as vulnerable as sex,
doesn’t create desire.

It restricts it.

So she starts to feel boxed in.
Like her body isn’t fully hers.
Like she can’t just be… without it leading somewhere.

And when that happens, her nervous system does what it’s supposed to do.

It pulls back.

Not to punish you.
Not because she doesn’t love you.

But because she doesn’t feel free or emotionally safe.

When she starts having sex just to avoid conflict…
to keep the peace…
or to meet an expectation…

It doesn’t build intimacy.
It builds resentment.

Because now sex isn’t connection for her.
It’s pressure she’s managing.

So she pulls back even more.
And the cycle tightens.
Over and over again.

This isn’t about one person being right and the other being wrong.
It’s about a pattern that quietly turns something meant to bring you together…
into something that drives you apart.

If you’re a man reading this...
your desire for sex isn’t the problem.
But if sex is the only place you know how to feel close,
you’re going to unintentionally create pressure.

And pressure will always kill the very thing you’re trying to build.

If you’re a woman reading this...
your need for emotional safety and freedom isn’t rejection to him.
It’s the foundation of real desire.

The goal isn’t just more sex.
It’s building a relationship where both people feel safe enough
to actually want it.

Because when connection exists outside the bedroom…
It finally has a chance to come back inside of it.
