Therapists Have Therapists

Gary Malone, LMFT

I’m a therapist, which means I spend my days helping people sort through their emotions, untangle their thoughts, and navigate life’s messiest moments. But here’s the kicker: I go to therapy too. Yup, the guy you talk to about your problems also talks to someone about his problems.

And honestly? It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Therapists are just people, but there’s this weird idea that therapists have it all figured out, like we’re walking around as some kind of emotionally invincible Yoda. But that’s not real life.

I have my own stuff to deal with. Stress, doubts, attachment issues, childhood stuff, bad days—you name it. Therapy isn’t just something I recommend to others; it’s something I use myself because, well, it works.

Seeing a therapist has made me a better therapist (and human) and here’s why:

1. I stay connected to the process.

Sitting on the other side of the room reminds me how hard it is to show up and be vulnerable. It keeps me grounded and helps me understand what my clients are going through.

2. I clear my head.

Ever try helping someone solve a puzzle when your own brain feels like a junk drawer? Therapy helps me sort out my own stuff so I can show up for my clients 100%.

3. I learn new tools.

Therapy isn’t just a place to vent; it’s a place to grow. I’ve picked up techniques and perspectives that make me a better therapist, dad, and person overall.

This should matter to you, because, look, therapy isn’t about being broken or needing to be fixed. It’s about being honest with yourself, growing, and learning how to handle life’s curveballs without letting them take you out.

If you’ve been on the fence about it, let me say this: even therapists need therapy. It’s not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign that you’re willing to show up for yourself.

So, yeah, therapy is for everyone. Even therapists. Especially therapists. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
